Invoking NATO Article 5: CIHOL guest lecture to the 53rd Regiment of Reconnaissance and Electronic Warfare
On 22 October, CIHOL’s Dr Marko Svicevic provided members of the 53rd Regiment of Reconnaissance and Electronic Warfare insights into legal issues surrounding Article 5 of the NATO Treaty. The guest lecture, organized within the existing cooperation framework between CIHOL and the Czech Armed Forces, examined NATO Article 5 within the law of self-defence and its invocability in response to cross-border armed attacks. Participants were also briefed on the surge in recent mutual defence pacts signed across the world, from the Pukpuk (Australia – Papua New Guinea), Kensington (Germany – United Kingdom) and Nancy (France – Poland) Treaties, to the recent mutual defence pact between Saudi Arabia and Pakistan. The lecture also followed an assessment of recent hybrid warfare and grey zone conflicts against NATO and its Member States, including the September 2025 Russian drone incursions into Poland.
